Enhancements in Specialized Cancer Care

The Premier Health Cancer Institute made great progress in 2019 by continuing to enhance a strong integrated network of specialized providers who mobilize to bring patients convenient, effective, and personalized cancer care. This collaborative care is provided by experts demonstrating high-quality care and sensitivity to every patient’s need.

Liver

Premier Surgical Oncology’s Liver Cancer Center of Ohio brings together multiple specialists, teaming up to tackle each patient’s cancer. The center’s multidisciplinary approach with surgical and interventional oncology makes it the only program in Ohio – and one of only a few in the country – to combat liver cancer in this way. Patients are provided with coordinated, collaborative, and comprehensive care at the all in one center. Physicians specialize in a variety of surgical and interventional procedures by demonstrating extensive experience and using advanced medical tools and facilities.

Head and Neck

Premier Health strives to keep patients close to home rather than traveling to large academic medical centers. The newly formed Head and Neck Cancer Program, the first in the region, provides a full spectrum of collaborative specialties including, oncologic ablation, facial reconstruction, chemoradiation, and all the intervening supportive services. This skilled and highly coordinated program offers patients diagnosis, treatment, and support services close to home. The program provides advanced care and treatment options with an interdisciplinary approach that collaborates across the full care continuum, inclusive of supportive services.

Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors

The comprehensive neuro-oncology multispecialty team has access to the very latest research and innovative technology, to provide optimal care for brain and spinal cord tumors. With access to brain mapping at the first Brain Mapping Center in the Midwest, Premier Health’s neurosurgeons have information for a highly individualized plan prior to surgery. This provides for greater precision and a delicate surgical approach, which strives to ensure vital areas of the brain are not compromised. With mapping, the physician can predict with accuracy the long-term outcomes for patients with brain tumors. The neuro-oncology team also uses an advanced medical linear accelerator, TrueBeam® Radiotherapy System. The radiotherapy system treats cancer anywhere in the body where radiation treatment is indicated, including the head and neck. It is fully integrated for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery with enhanced speed and accuracy.

High Risk Breast

The High Risk Breast Cancer Centers at Miami Valley Hospital North and Miami Valley Hospital South combine advanced technology with expert clinical assessment for earlier detection of breast cancer in high risk women. The centers offer risk assessment, genetic counseling by a licensed certified genetic counselor, education on breast screenings and self-breast examinations, and long-term follow-up care. The staff of the High-Risk Breast Cancer Centers include a licensed certified genetic counselor, oncology nurse navigators, board-certified breast surgeons, and diagnostic radiologists. The team works cooperatively with a patient’s physician and health care team.

Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men. Patients have access to an Advanced Prostate Cancer Center located at Miami Valley Hospital South which offers advanced technology and procedures to successfully treat prostate cancer. Miami Valley Hospital also offers the UroNav Fusion Biopsy System. This technology fuses pre-biopsy magnetic resonance images of the prostate with ultrasound-guided biopsy images in real time. This provides exceptional delineation of the prostate and suspicious lesions, as well as clear visualization of the biopsy needle. The center is composed of Urology, Oncology, Radiation oncology, and a nurse navigator all working together to bring exceptional cancer care. A new technology called SpaceOAR was also made available for prostate patients receiving external beam radiotherapy at Atrium Medical Center and Miami Valley Hospital South. It is a one-time procedure done prior to radiotherapy that can protect the rectum from radiation exposure to reduce side effects during the radiotherapy. It disappears after the treatment is completed.
