Genetic Counseling And Testing

All women have a chance of developing breast cancer, and those with a family or personal history of cancer have an increased risk. If you or a close family member has a history of cancer, our genetic counselors at Atrium Medical CenterMiami Valley Hospital North, and Miami Valley Hospital South can address your concerns, discuss testing options with you, and offer knowledge, technology, and personal support.

About five to 10 percent of breast cancers are linked to a genetic predisposition for the disease.

As advances in understanding the causes of breast cancer continue, researchers have identified certain genes that — when altered or mutated — increase a woman’s risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer. In particular, women who have an alteration in BRCA genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) have a significantly increased chance (up to 85 percent) for developing breast cancer or ovarian cancer (up to 45 percent).

Managing Your Risk

Prevention, screening and early detection are the best ways to help reduce the chance of developing breast cancer for women at increased risk. A tailored plan for addressing breast cancer risks may include:

  • Increased observation by your physicians
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Chemoprevention
  • Preventative surgery

High-Risk Breast Cancer Centers

For those women considered high-risk due to personal or hereditary reasons, our High-Risk Breast Cancer Centers are dedicated to providing a comprehensive breast cancer risk evaluation, follow-up care, and education.
