GOG 3127 Clinical Trial For Ovarian Cancer

Cancer care is constantly evolving, with new discoveries leading to more personalized treatments for cancer patients. One significant advancement is the identification of the HER2 protein in ovarian cancer. The Premier Health Cancer Institute is the first site in the country to open the GOG 3127 clinical trial for ovarian cancer, focusing on patients with stage III or IV ovarian cancer whose tumors show the HER2 protein, offering hope for many women facing this difficult diagnosis.

Studies show that up to 40% of ovarian cancers may have an expression of HER2. This clinical trial will study a new, targeted treatment option designed for individuals who have completed their first round of chemotherapy and are entering the maintenance phase of treatment.

Why Is This Clinical Trial Important?

Access to the latest treatment options is crucial for cancer patients in the Miami Valley. Lead by gynecologic oncologist Dr. Michael Guy, this clinical trial allows Premier Health to offer an innovative option for aggressive ovarian cancer, ensuring patients receive advanced care close to home. Participation in clinical trials is essential for developing breakthrough treatments that change the standard of care and improve patient outcomes—both now and in the future. By conducting these studies locally, patients can stay where they feel most comfortable and supported while benefiting from innovative therapies.

What Is The Goal?

The primary objective of this clinical trial is to determine whether the new targeted treatment works better than the current standard therapy. Researchers hope to see patients remain cancer-free for longer periods and ultimately achieve longer survival. The trial will measure treatment response, tumor shrinkage, and overall quality of life, aiming to set a new benchmark in ovarian cancer care.

How Does It Work?

This is a phase 3 clinical trial, meaning the safest medication doses have already been studied and established. Two groups of patients taking two different medications will be compared:

  • Group 1: receives the standard treatment with bevacizumab alone
  • Group 2: receives bevacizumab plus the study drug, T-DXd (Trastuzumab Deruxtecan)

After several years, researchers will evaluate which treatment option provides better patient outcomes.

Advancing Ovarian Cancer Care

Clinical trials are vital for advancing cancer care. They provide patients with serious conditions access to new medications as they are developed, often before they become widely available. They can also help reduce side effects and improve quality of life. By supporting clinical trials, we contribute to more cures, longer lives, and better results for patients. Offering these opportunities at Premier Health enables both patients and providers to make a meaningful impact in the global fight against cancer—right here in the Greater Dayton Region. Together, we are advancing medicine and supporting patients in their journey toward better health.
