Driving Safety Programs

Premier Health, the Injury Prevention Center, and CareFlight Air and Mobile provide safe driving programs for teens and adults, including drug and alcohol awareness and the impact substance use can have on driving ability.

The Safe Communities program works to prevent traffic-related fatalities and injuries by increasing awareness through education and social campaigns.

Led by the Injury Prevention Center, the Montgomery County – Safe Communities program is funded by a grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office. Drive ALIVE

Motor vehicle-related trauma remains the leading cause of teen injury and death in the United States. Through a partnership with the Montgomery County Juvenile Court and the  Warren County Juvenile Court we deliver a comprehensive prevention program that highlights risky driving behavior and consequences.

Drive ALIVE is an evidence-based, interactive program that was developed as an alternative to traditional sentencing practices.

The goal of Drive ALIVE is to educate and provide awareness to juveniles about the scope and magnitude of the consequences of deviant behavior behind the wheel of a car. The court acts as the referral source by requiring convicted teens to attend Drive ALIVE as part of their sentencing. This course is open to the community and court-referral is not necessary.

The classes include:

  • Small group discussions
  • Simulated trauma resuscitation by nurses and first-responders
  • Talk by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) on the effects of alcohol and drug abuse
  • Brief session with a hospital chaplain
  • Live session in the Miami Valley Hospital Rehabilitation Unit involving activities with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists highlight the process of recovery from traumatic injuries
  • Gripping testimonial from family members and a former trauma patient that show the devastating consequences of destructive driving
  • Demonstration of fatal vision goggles with an Ohio State High Way Patrol Trooper who discusses the legal implications of traffic offenses
  • Watching an interactive “Make the Right Choice” video

The four-week program meets on Tuesday, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Participants must pre-register and will be contacted to confirm registration.

The course fee is $75 and is payable by person or cashier’s check to the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation.

To register and pay by phone, call CareFinders at (866) 608-3463(866) 608-3463. Please indicate that you are signing up for the Drive ALIVE program through Miami Valley Hospital.

Drive Smart

For more than 20 years, CareFlight Air and Mobile Services has offered Drive Smart, a nationally recognized mock crash education program

Drive Smart delivers a powerful, realistic portrayal of what can happen when drivers choose to drive distracted or impaired. The program is designed to reach young drivers at a critical age—before poor decisions behind the wheel can change lives forever.

Through a collaborative effort with Miami Valley Hospital and Atrium Medical Center trauma teams, along with multiple community partners, the Drive Smart program brings an emergency response scenario to life. Participating agencies may include:

  • Local law enforcement
  • Fire departments
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  • Dispatch centers
  • Tow truck services
  • The county coroner
  • Funeral home representatives

Together, they recreate the sights, sounds, and emotional impact of a serious motor vehicle crash, delivering a memorable safety message that resonates long after the event ends.

Schedule a Drive Smart Program

The Drive Smart program is provided at no cost to our partner high schools. While many schools choose to host Drive Smart events in advance of prom season, the program can be scheduled throughout the school year.

Schools are encouraged to contact CareFlight early to secure a preferred event date.

CarFit

Older drivers are often the safest drivers because they are more likely to wear their seatbelts and less likely to speed or drive impaired. However, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies.

Driver safety programs improve adult driver safety by addressing cognitive abilities and skills. Older drivers also can improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them. A proper fit in one’s car can greatly increase the driver’s safety and the safety of others.

CarFit is an educational program that gives older adults the chance to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. The CarFit program provides information and materials on community-specific resources that can enhance safety and increase mobility in the community.

At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and health professionals work with each participant to ensure they “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. A CarFit check takes about 20 minutes to complete. CarFit is a collaboration with:

  • AAA (American Automobile Association)
  • AARP (American Association of Retired Persons)
  • AOTA (American Occupational Therapy Association)
