Injury Prevention
At Premier Health, injury prevention is a priority — and a requirement to maintain verification of our Level I Trauma Center at Miami Valley Hospital and Level III Trauma Center at Atrium Medical Center.
The mission of the Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dayton is to keep residents safe on the road, at home, at work, and at play.
Injury remains the leading cause of potential lives lost and leaves thousands of Ohioans chronically disabled every year. Medical costs of injury account for 12 percent of national health care expenditures. The financial, physical, and emotional impacts
touch every home, school, and workplace in all our communities. Injuries related to trauma are the most life-threatening and the most preventable.
Effective injury prevention begins with a focus on the most common causes of injury in the community. Our programs focus on the most prevalent injury areas, including:
- Teen driving safety
- Child passenger safety
- Bike/pedestrian safety
- Occupational safety
- Agricultural/farm safety
- Gun violence
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Sports injuries
- Bleeding control
- Elderly falls
- Unintentional poisoning
- Prescription drug overdose
Putting Research Into Practice
The Injury Prevention Center works to address potential injuries by turning research into practical, community-based action. Our main activities involve:
- Monitoring the incidence and prevalence of unintentional injury in our region
- Identifying opportunities to target the unique injury prevention needs of our community
- Planning, implementing, and evaluating multi-disciplinary and evidence-based interventions
- Providing ongoing educational outreach and a wide range of training opportunities to local schools, community groups, and other health care providers
- Partnering with local, state, and national organizations to advance the field of injury prevention by promoting initiatives that facilitate safe behavior
We are hopeful that we can work together to ensure that we reach as many families and patients as possible with the information and resources they need to stay safe on the road, at home, at work, and at play.
