Upper Valley Medical Center’s Level III Trauma Center
Upper Valley Medical Center’s Level III trauma center – the only one in Miami County – treats seriously injured patients in Troy and surrounding communities. This trauma center is part of Premier Health’s trauma network, which also includes the Level I trauma center at Miami Valley Hospital and the Level III trauma center at Atrium Medical Center.
Trauma care at Upper Valley Medical Center includes:
- Assessment
- Resuscitation
- Emergency care of traumatic injury
- Stabilization
Many of our most critically injured trauma patients remain at our hospital to complete their inpatient hospital care and continue recovery through Premier Health’s Rehabilitation Program.
If your injuries require the skills of surgical specialists and other more advanced care, CareFlight Air and Mobile Services will transport you to the Level I trauma center at Miami Valley Hospital or another suitable facility as quickly as possible.
What We Offer
Our Level III trauma center treats injuries from vehicle crashes, industrial accidents, penetrating trauma, and falls, with the service and support of:
- Emergency medicine physicians in-hospital 24 hours a day
- Prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists
- Coordinated response from a trauma team
- 24-hour diagnostic imaging, such as:
- Laboratory testing
Our trauma care team collaborates with many other specialists, depending on your condition.
What To Expect
The trauma care you receive at our Level III trauma center begins at the scene. The EMS team transports you by ambulance and radios ahead to alert the trauma team and share information about your injuries and medical condition.
Trauma surgeons, emergency medicine doctors, nurses, and other support staff use this information to prepare for your arrival and decide the best way to evaluate and treat your injuries. The team meets you as soon as you arrive and takes you directly to a trauma resuscitation room.
The trauma team immediately:
- Performs an initial assessment
- Identifies and treats life-threatening injuries
- Calls on board-certified specialty doctors for consultation and treatment as needed
If you need surgery, the trauma team will assemble the surgical specialists you need. Our chaplains, social workers, and other support staff help you and your family to cope with traumatic events associated with an injury or condition. When your family arrives at the hospital we quickly ensure that:
- A doctor discusses your medical situation with them
- They are brought to see you as soon as possible
Depending on your condition, you may need additional support and ongoing care after you leave the hospital. Learn more about trauma follow-up care.
What Is a Level III Trauma Center?
The difference between trauma center levels is based on the depth of resources available to treat trauma patients with multi-system injuries, not on the quality of care.
Level III trauma centers:
- Provide rapid care for all forms of traumatic injury
- Offer 24-hour immediate coverage by trauma surgeons
- Provide prompt availability of orthopedic surgeons as well as fully staffed operating rooms
- Incorporate a comprehensive quality improvement program, continually assessing ways to improve care of injured patients.
- Have transfer agreements in place for patients needing more comprehensive care at a Level I trauma center, such as Miami Valley Hospital
- Provide active outreach programs for referring communities
- Offer continuing education for nursing and allied health personnel and the trauma team
- Maintain injury prevention programs
Upper Valley Medical Center’s Trauma Program provides high quality, safe, and effective care to injured patients from resuscitation to rehabilitation. Trauma team members participate in disaster preparedness, injury prevention, and the development of trauma systems at the regional, state, and national level.
