How Can Physical Therapy Help You?
Many simple, day-to-day activities are no longer easy after you’ve been injured or had surgery, or because of a health problem. Physical therapy can help you get back to your daily tasks and activities, like:
- Getting in and out of a chair, bed, or the car
- Walking
- Climbing stairs
- Lifting or reaching for objects
The goal of physical therapy is to restore or improve your strength, balance, endurance, coordination, and flexibility and to help your joints move better so you can get back to your normal routine. Physical therapy also can help you manage your pain.
What Happens During a Typical Therapy Session?
Your therapist will schedule a visit to your home. Together you will determine the focus of your therapy sessions. This first visit usually includes an evaluation of your current abilities, limitations, and needs. Later visits include a personalized exercise program and other treatments based on your goals.
Family members or caregivers who will be helping you with your therapy will also learn how to:
- Better assist you in most activities
- Help you with your home exercise program
- Work with you so that you can remain safe in your own home
As you recover, you will all benefit from tips provided by your therapist.
Who Can Be Helped With Physical Therapy?
People who are successfully helped with physical therapy may have one of these conditions:
- Joint replacements
- Bone fractures or breaks
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Weakness due to illness or prolonged hospital stay
- Post-surgical recovery
- Diseases, surgery, or head injury (concussion for example) that makes walking difficult
- Neurological disorders
- Stroke
- Balance problems that make falling more likely
- Amputated limb or new prosthetic
- Pulmonary disease ( COPD)
- Cardiac disease
How Often Will You Need Physical Therapy?
The frequency and duration of your therapy visits will depend on your needs and personal goals. Typically, a therapist will plan on two to three visits a week.
How Can You Arrange For Physical Therapy In Your Home?
Physical therapists need a doctor’s order to come into the home. As a result, if you believe you would benefit from physical therapy services, speak with your health care provider.
