Requirements for APRN
The following are requirements for an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse:
- Graduate of accredited nursing program
- Current licensures in the State of Ohio as a Registered Nurse
- Current licensures in the State of Ohio as an APRN
- Prefer three to five years of APRN experience
- Current BLS Certification
- Meets all requirements for Advanced Practice Nursing in the State of Ohio as outlined in the Ohio Revised Code 4723.41
- Evidence of a Standard Care Arrangement with a Collaborating Physician
Job Qualifications for APRN
The advanced practice nurse is permitted to function in the provision of services to patients within his or her designated patient population(s). The advanced practice nurse holds roles as practitioner, educator, consultant and researcher. The advanced practice nurse has in–depth knowledge of evidence-based practice within a specialty that results in competencies to expand the boundaries of (a) nursing practice by focusing on illness and wellness management, (b) advance the practice of other nurses and (c) develop organizational/system modifications to support and improve the practice of nursing.
Nature and Scope for APRN
The advanced practice nurse functions in collaboration with physicians, with or without supervision. Basic privileges of each advanced practice nurse are outlined below under “principle duties” and awarded through the Medical Staff Office. Not all advanced practice nurses routinely perform all of the outlined duties yet each is qualified through education, certification and training. Job description outlines hospital expectations in both patient care and processes. The advanced practice nurse practices independently under the state of Ohio Board of Nursing. The role of the advanced practice nurse varies based upon certification, job expectations and standard care agreement between the advanced practice nurse and collaborating physician(s). In general, the advanced practice nurse participates in direct patient care, medical decision making and prescribing practices if applicable.
Requirements for PA
The following are requirements for a Physician Assistant:
- Documentation of current licensure and certification or eligibility by the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants
- May obtain certificates to prescribe and thereafter prescribe drugs and devices in accordance with the PA formulary and physician delegated authority
- Meets all requirements for a Supervision Agreement in the State of Ohio as outlined in the Ohio Revised Code 4730.19
- Documentation of BLS certification
Nature and Scope for PA
A physician-PA team supports efficient patient-centered healthcare. Physicians and PAs are allowed to customize team practice based on each member’s training and experience and the needs of the patients seen in the practice in accordance with Chapter 4730 of the Ohio Revised Code.
