What are movement disorders?
Movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremors, Dystonia, spasticity, and ataxia are progressive, neurodegenerative conditions that affect physical movement and function. Symptoms include shaking, tremors, slow movement, or rigidity. People over 60, Caucasians, and men are mostly at risk for Parkinson’s disease, although some as young as 18 can be diagnosed. At the CNSI Movement Disorder Center, we treat children as well as adults.
What causes movement disorders?
Movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremors, Dystonia, age disorders, spasticity, and ataxia are, in a small part, genetic. Most cases, however, are believed to be triggered by some environmental factor. Parkinson’s disease has also been linked to some pesticides and other toxic substances.
What are some signs of movement disorders?
Difficulty of movement, slow movement, tremors, shaking, or rigidity can be signs of a movement disorder. Problems with sleep, speech, or memory can also accompany other symptoms.
How are movement disorders diagnosed?
Understanding your symptoms is key for a doctor when diagnosing a movement disorder. This may include a review of your family and medical history, or a physical examination. Arriving at a specific diagnosis may rely on conducting tests like computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and DaT scans
