Hemoglobin A1C Screening

The hemoglobin A1C screening is for anyone who has diabetes. It measures how well they have controlled their blood sugar during the prior three months. Results help those with diabetes understand how their food choices affect their blood sugar.

Premier Health can add the hemoglobin A1C screening to any cholesterol screening, but it is available only for those who have been told by a doctor that they have diabetes. Although this test is often recommended to be done every six months, every three months is better.

How the Screening Works

In just a few minutes, this easy screening can determine how well someone with diabetes has controlled their blood sugar during the prior three months. Here’s what’s involved:

  • Participants do not need to fast before being screened.
  • A quick needle stick to the finger will provide a small amount of blood, which is all that’s needed.
  • Within five minutes or so, results are shared privately with each participant.
  • If necessary, participants are privately counseled on steps they can take to improve their blood sugar levels. This includes listening to any concerns and helping each participant plan for a healthier lifestyle.

Our overall goal is to educate and to spend time counseling each individual.

What is the Ideal Location for a Screening?

An indoor, temperature-controlled environment is needed due to the sensitivity of instruments.  We’ll need to avoid cold drafts, high humidity, and the sun. Some locations that work well are:

  • Churches
  • Community centers
  • Senior centers
  • Workplaces

What Will Our Group Need to Provide?

We’ll arrive fully equipped with the supplies needed to screen all participants. Here’s what you need to provide:

  • Access to electricity
  • Tables and chairs
  • Trash cans

Due to OSHA regulations, food or drink is not permitted in the screening area.
