U.S. News & World Report

Miami Valley Hospital Ranked 9th in the State, Highest in Dayton Metropolitan Area

For the 8th year in a row, Miami Valley Hospital was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the top hospital in the Dayton metropolitan area in 2024. The hospital ranked 9th among Ohio's hospitals. The distinction includes Miami Valley Hospital North in Englewood and Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville. 

The hospital also achieved a “high performing” designation from U.S. News & World Report in the following 11 areas in 2024:

  • Aortic valve surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Heart bypass
  • Colon cancer surgery
  • Hip replacement
  • Knee replacement
  • Stroke
  • Leukemia, lymphoma & myeloma

Best Maternity Care

U.S. News & World Report named Miami Valley Hospital to its annual list of hospitals for best maternity care 2025. The list is intended to help expectant families make informed choices about where to seek high quality care for uncomplicated pregnancies. To be recognized among the Best Hospitals for Maternity, hospitals must excel on multiple quality metrics that matter to expectant families. High-performing hospitals had fewer early deliveries, fewer C-sections, and fewer newborn complications than other hospitals, as well as higher rates of breast milk feeding. Only one-third of the hospitals evaluated by U.S. News for maternity care earned a high performing rating.

Healthgrades

Healthgrades is an independent organization created to help consumers understand, compare and evaluate hospital performance. They provide objective, comprehensive information about hospital quality in America's hospitals. Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on clinical outcomes—risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications. They recognize the top-performing hospitals in the nation that have achieved excellence in particular specialties, clinical excellence, and patient safety.

  • Top 10% in the Nation for Cardiology Services for three years in a row (2020-2022)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Heart Attack for nine years in a row (2014-2022)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Heart Failure for nineteen years in a row (2007-2025)

  • Recipient of the Critical Care Excellence Award for thirteen years in a row (2009-2021)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Sepsis for eighteen years in a row (2006-2023)

Miami Valley Hospital Receives 2024 Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award

Miami Valley Hospital has received the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s 2024 Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospitals’ commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence from the American Heart Association (AHA). Additionally, Miami Valley Hospital also received the 2024 Target: Stroke Honor Roll and the Advanced Therapy, Honor Roll awards. The Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center received this recognition for meeting quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA.

Accreditations and Designations

Miami Valley Hospital South Receives Level III Trauma Center Designation

November 2019 – Miami Valley Hospital South has achieved designation as a Level III Trauma Center from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Miami Valley Hospital South joins Premier Health’s trauma network that includes Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center and Atrium Medical Center’s Level III Trauma Center.

Premier Health First in Ohio, Second in Nation to Achieve System-Wide Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation

June 2020 – Premier Health is the first health system in Ohio and second in the nation to achieve system-wide Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA). This distinction from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recognizes emergency departments that provide excellent care for older adults. The bronze standard Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation applies to Atrium Medical Center in Middletown (which was accredited in October 2019), Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Miami Valley Hospital Austin Boulevard Emergency Center in Miamisburg, Miami Valley Hospital Jamestown Emergency Center in Jamestown, Miami Valley Hospital North in Englewood, Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville, and Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy.

Miami Valley Hospital Awarded Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Care

May 2019 – Miami Valley Hospital has once again earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Heart-Check mark as an Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Center. The Gold Seal of Approval® and the Heart-Check mark represent symbols of quality from their respective organizations. With this certification, Miami Valley Hospital joins an elite group of health care organizations focused on highly-specialized stroke care.

The Wound Care Center & Hyperbaric Services at Miami Valley Hospital South Recognized with National Award for Clinical Excellence

April 2019 – The Wound Care Center & Hyperbaric Services at Miami Valley Hospital South recently received the Center of Distinction Award, which was given by Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services. The Center achieved outstanding clinical outcomes for twelve consecutive months, including patient satisfaction higher than 92 percent, and a minimum wound healing rate of at least 91 percent within 30 median days to heal. There were 621 Centers eligible for the Center of Distinction award and 423 achieved the honor

Miami Valley Hospital Earns Designation as Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence

February 2019 – Miami Valley Hospital has been named an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). Hospitals must meet or exceed antimicrobial stewardship standards set by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Miami Valley Hospital is one of only 41 hospitals in the Unites States, and the only one in Southwest Ohio, to be designated as a Center of Excellence for Antimicrobial Stewardship, a two-year designation.

Hospital Bariatric Center an official “Center of Excellence”

August 2019 – Miami Valley Hospital was recently recognized as a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the UnitedHealthcare/Optum Program. Bariatric surgery is unique since insurance companies require providers to be what is known as a center of excellence or accredited center from the American College of Surgeons. Beyond that baseline, each individual insurance has its own center of excellence designation it requires in order for their patients to receive treatment.

Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care

April 2018 – Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio has, for the second time, recognized all Premier Health maternity centers with a Blue Distinction® Center+ for Maternity Care designation as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.

The maternity centers include Atrium Medical Center, Miami Valley Hospital with an additional site at Miami Valley Hospital South, and Upper Valley Medical Center.

Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated hospitals that demonstrate expertise in delivering improved patient safety and better health outcomes based on objective measures that were developed with input from the medical community. To receive a Blue Distinction Centers+ for Maternity Care designation, a hospital must also demonstrate cost-efficiency.

Joint Commission Certification

The Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest and largest health care accrediting body, has accredited Miami Valley Hospital as a health care organization. A comprehensive evaluation is conducted every three years with the last survey taking place in September 2017. Due to COVID, all hospital accreditation periods will be extended until safe to review.

Miami Valley Hospital main campus has maintained continuous Joint Commission accreditation since December 2014 as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Miami Valley Hospital South maintained continuous Joint Commission accreditation since November 2016 as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital.

American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence

2014 to Present – The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the American College of Radiology's (ACR) voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory mammography accreditation program. The Breast Center at Miami Valley Hospital North first achieved this accreditation in 2014. The Breast Centers at Miami Valley Hospital and Miami Valley Hospital South are also Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence.
