Halloween is filled with fun traditions, and candy is often at the center of the celebration. While it's perfectly fine to enjoy a favorite treat or two, a healthy Halloween is all about balance, moderation, and making a plan for the candy that often lingers long after October 31. Try these tips for a healthier Halloween:

  • Eat a good meal. Eating prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters especially from filling up on Halloween treats.
  • Examine all treats. Throw away any spoiled, unwrapped, or suspicious items. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.
  • Keep candy out of sight. Store treats in a designated container or cabinet rather than leaving it on the kitchen counter, where it can become a constant temptation.
  • Create a candy rationing plan. Instead of unlimited access to Halloween candy, allow one or two pieces per day or designate specific treat times throughout the week. Spreading treats out over time can help reduce excess sugar consumption while still letting children enjoy their Halloween haul.

Halloween is meant to be enjoyed! By planning ahead and enjoying treats in moderation, you can make Halloween both fun and healthy long after the costumes are put away.
