As we age, the effects of normal wear and tear take a toll on the spine. Problems that cause chronic back and neck pain could include nerve damage, ligament and muscle strain, damaged discs (the cushions between bones in the spine), and arthritis. Misaligned joints and inflammation of tissues from arthritis also can cause spine and back pain.

Conditions We Treat

At Premier Health, we are fully equipped to treat and manage nearly any condition that causes instability of the spine. The conditions we treat include:

Non-Surgical and Surgical Treatments for Spine Conditions

Treatments for spine conditions focus on reducing pain and correcting the problem that is causing the pain.

In many cases, your doctor will first try non-surgical care. If surgery is needed to stabilize the spine, our spine surgeons tailor minimally invasive techniques – making small incisions and using tiny instruments – to treat your type of spine disorder.

Surgery may involve the discs that cushion the bones of your spine (vertebrae) or the vertebrae themselves. Minimally invasive surgery can mean a faster recovery.

Treatment options include:

  • Medicines. Your doctor may prescribe medicines to treat pain or relax the muscles in your back.
  • Physical therapy. Exercises to strengthen the muscles of the back and neck can help reduce pain.
  • Nerve block injections. An epidural anesthetic is injected near a nerve to block pain receptors.
  • Facet joint injections. Pain management injection for the lower back
  • Nutrition counseling. Our dietitian works with your to create an eating plan that ensures you get the right nutrients and avoid foods that may cause inflammation.
  • Acupuncture. A complementary medicine technique that uses small needles to stimulate the body’s flow of energy (chi).
  • Dry needling. A holistic health technique used by physical therapists. A needle is placed into the muscle, causing a local reaction that increases blood flow to the area and relieves pain.
  • Massage therapy entails applying varying degrees of pressure to alleviate painful muscles, tendons, and joints.
  • iFuse Implant System® for sacroiliac fusion, used for conditions including sacroiliac joint dysfunction that are a direct result of instability and degenerative sacroiliitis. This minimally invasive procedure utilizes a small incision and a guide pin to place rigid titanium implants to provide stability to the sacroiliac joint, which results in less pain.
  • Surgery. If you need surgery, your doctor will talk with you about the different procedures available to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive techniques. Options include:
    • Discectomy. Removing the herniated (bulging) portion of a disc to relieve nerve irritation and inflammation
    • Laminectomy. Removing bone that is narrowing your spinal canal to relieve nerve pressure caused by the narrowing (stenosis)
    • Spinal fusion. Connecting two or more bones in your spine to stabilize it and relieve pain caused by nerve compression
    • Kyphoplasty. Injecting bone cement into spinal bones (vertebrae) to stabilize spinal fractures and relieve pain due to nerve compression
    • Neurointerventional surgery. Surgeons place tiny needles, using x-ray guidance, at the source of pain. Anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medicines can be injected at the spinal nerve or spinal joints.
  • Rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is a big part of your recovery from a spine condition. Your doctor may prescribe inpatient or outpatient therapy, depending on your specific condition. Your rehabilitation program will focus on your specific loss of function. Options include:
  • Home care. If you need rehabilitation services at home to help you recover, Fidelity Health Care gives you the support you need.
