Robotic Surgery

Your surgeon may recommend your surgery be assisted by a robot. Surgeries that include the assistance of the robot, called the da Vinci® Surgical System, have been performed at Premier Health for years. They can provide you and your surgeon with significant advantages.

What Takes Place During Robotic Surgery?

Very small incisions (cuts) are made in your body. A robotic arm is placed in each incision. One will hold a camera. The other arms hold surgical instruments.

Your surgeon controls each of the robotic arms while seated at a computer console near you. This computer console provides your surgeon with a 3-D, highly magnified view of the surgical area. Special capabilities of the robot enable your surgeon’s hand movements to be extremely precise.

A surgical team will be by your side to assist your surgeon throughout the procedure.

Da Vinci® Surgical System

Premier Health brings the most advanced robotic surgery in the region to Miami Valley Hospital with the da Vinci 5® system, offering enhanced precision, control, and visualization that can lead to better outcomes. For patients, when a robotic approach is appropriate, surgery with this method may be performed through smaller incisions with highly controlled instrument movements, which means less pain and quicker recovery times for most people.

At Miami Valley Hospital, the da Vinci 5 will support procedures in areas such as gynecologic oncology, general surgery, foregut surgery, gynecology, thoracic surgery, and urology. At Miami Valley Hospital South, the da Vinci Xi will support hernia repair, general surgery, gynecologic oncology, and urology.

As the first in the area to offer this technology, patients no longer need to travel to major metro areas to access cutting-edge care, reflecting our strong commitment to delivering the highest standard of treatment.

What Are the Benefits Of Robotic Surgery?

For the surgeon:

  • Magnifies images up to 10 times
  • Clearer view of delicate structures
  • Ability to more easily avoid damaging nearby tissue and nerves
  • Ability to more easily perform complex tissue reconstruction

For the patient:

  • Less pain
  • Less risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery and return to normal activity
  • Smaller, less noticeable scars
  • Less blood loss

Can My Surgeon Use Robotic Surgery?

Premier Health surgeons routinely use robotic surgery for procedures involving:

  • Gall bladder removal
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Hernia repair
  • Small and large bowel surgery
  • Thoracic (chest) surgery, including treatment of lung cancer
  • Urology surgery, including prostate gland removal, kidney procedures and major bladder procedures

Not all medical conditions are right for robotic surgery. There may be reasons why your surgeon believes an open (traditional) approach, or a different minimally invasive approach is best for you.

Ask your surgeon for more information about robotic surgery and whether it is right for you.
