There are two main types of reconstruction. The most common in the United States right now is to use expanders and implants. The other choice would be to use the patient's own tissue, which is referred to as autologous tissue reconstruction. That tissue can come from their stomach, or their thigh or buttocks, and it's a personal choice. Some patients aren't really interested in having surgery or scars on other parts of their body. They'd like the surgery confined to their chest, and that's where implants come in. There's typically shorter recovery times and times off work related to that, and that's the most common type of reconstruction across the United States right now. Still, there are lots of patients that would like to use their own tissue and don't want to worry about having implants in their body or other foreign material in their body, and they prefer to use their own tissue. It's a great option for them.
