What is A Fib?

Atrial fibrillation (A Fib) occurs when the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat irregularly and fast, disrupting the normal movement of blood and increasing the risk of clotting, according to the American Heart Association. If a clot forms, it could travel to the brain and cause a stroke. Approximately 15 to 20 percent of stroke patients have A Fib. That's why, if you have A Fib, you can be at risk of stroke. 

More than 2.7 million Americans have A Fib, and that number is expected to increase as people continue to live longer, according to the AMA. 

Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and sleep apnea can put you at higher risk of developing A Fib. Symptoms of A Fib include:
