Advancing Our Academic Mission: An Update on Premier Health’s New Institute Structure

Premier Health is entering an exciting new era with the launch of our redesigned Institute Structure—a model designed to bring specialties together, support physician development, advance academic medicine and enhance the delivery of high-value care.

As we transition Miami Valley Hospital from a teaching hospital to a fully integrated academic medical center, we are emphasizing a tripartite academic mission that combines clinical care, research, and education. This includes integrating academic faculty, growing residency/fellowship programs, and expanding undergraduate medical education (UME) clinical sites while strengthening a culture and brand aligned with our academic vision.

We’ve aligned clinical governance with academic leadership, connecting resident and medical student teaching and research engagement. Team-building efforts have begun to strengthen collaboration across the Boonshoft School of Medicine and with Premier Health medical staff and administration.

We’ve started to align budgeting and operations to fully support our academic mission—from chair packages to shared services for GME budgets and clinical trials. Integrating Wright State Physicians Inc. (WSPI) clinicians into the Premier Physicians Network provides the foundation to advance this strategy.

Here’s a quick look at the WSPI physician specialties that have transitioned to date:

  • Nov 2024: Infectious Disease & OBGYN
  • Feb 2025: Internal Medicine (Endocrinology/Allergy/Neurology)
  • Apr 2025: Trauma Surgery & General Surgery
  • Oct 2025: Family Medicine & Emergency Medicine
  • Dec 2025: Psychiatry

This redesign positions Premier Health to foster stronger collaboration, support physician growth, and deliver exceptional, high-value care across our system. Your engagement remains critical as we continue this transformative journey together.
