No, not necessarily. However, the rate is very high and we recommend that women who are obese get tested for gestational diabetes at the very first visit during pregnancy. This is different than women that are not obese. A normal weight woman, we would recommend that she gets tested between 24 and 28 weeks. With obesity, we want to make sure that there isn't any underlying diabetes or glucose intolerance right from the start of the pregnancy. Therefore, if you're obese, your doctor should be ordering a diabetes test at the very first visit you're seen.
