Should you use heat or ice for joint pain?

Typically when we talk about pain in joints or specifically pain in a hip, ice is generally better for pain that comes from hip arthritis whereas pain that comes from a muscle sprain or tear is oftentimes treated better with heat.  So typically think of pain that is coming from muscles being treated well with heat, whereas pain that's coming from arthritis is best treated with ice.
