Premier Health’s Barbershop Health Program Receives AEDs

Five Montgomery County Barbershops Now Have Automated External Defibrillators

DAYTON, Ohio (April 5, 2022)  Premier Health enhanced its Barbershop Health program by providing and installing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at five locations.

The five partnering shops include City Stars Unlimited Barber and Salon in Dayton, Deeez Cuttz Barbershop in Trotwood, Headliners Barbershop in Dayton, ManUp Barbershop in Huber Heights, and Stylzes Barber and Nail Care in Dayton.

Defibrillators are medical devices that send an electric pulse to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat in the event of an emergency.

“Premier Health continues to team up with local barbers to improve the health of the communities we serve. Each participating barber has received CPR, AED, and first aid training,” said Roopsi Narayan, MPH, CPH, director of Premier Community Health. “Now they have access to equipment that could save a client’s life.”

Each barber has been certified by the American Heart Association.

Barbershop Health Clinics strive to increase awareness of chronic health conditions and promote healthy lifestyle choices within the African-American community by offering free health screenings and health education which emphasizes the importance of prevention, early detection, disease self-management, and the benefits of healthy living.

“The Barbershop Health program is about reaching people where they live and interact,” said Narayan. “These barbers are active participants who have opened their doors and prepared themselves to make a difference in their community. We are proud to make this life-saving resource available to each of them.”

During a Barbershop Health Clinic, voluntary health screenings feature free blood pressure, height, and weight measurements, along with a body mass index calculation and a fingerstick test for A1c. Furthermore, clinics from September through December have a limited number of free flu shots available.
